Leiden's Hortus botanicus expanded significantly in the 19th century. This was while Sebald Justinus Brugmans was prefect. The layout of the garden was redesigned and, for example, an English style garden created. Brugmans even had plans for a zoo. Although a zoo never materialised, for a while the Hortus did have a number of large animals roaming around!
A four-horned African sheep, an American bison with a calf, two kangaroos, two 'tiger lions', two vultures and a young Russian bear. This list is from the book 'The Leiden Hortus' by Karstens & Kleibrink (1982). All that is missing is which unfortunate gardener had to shovel all that poo.
