For me, Leiden has long been synonymous with Boerhaave: a broadly oriented scientist, innovative, and a pioneer in modern medicine. Moreover, Boerhaave (1668-1738) continues to inspire young people. I will not soon forget having to drag my high school students out of the Boerhaave museum at the end of the day, even though we entered when the museum was opening. Now, they even want to study something in his field (pharmacy, pathology, chemistry, biology). When you still inspire young students so many years after your death, you are truly exceptional.
