‘Praesidium Libertatis’ is the university’s motto. As an alumna and staff member, as well as a skipper for the Leidse Rederij boat company, this motto is central to me.
As an alumna, the university has been my window to freedom. As a staff member, I’m proud of the university, which needs freedom to advance both science and the world. And as a skipper and guide for Leidse Rederij, I tell my guests on the boat the story of the city and its university as a ‘bastion of freedom’.
My colleague proposed the addition of ‘Non Est Anarchia’: it is important, after all, that we all stick to the rules and agreements that we have made!
