Monday 3 September 1979, 14.30 hours, in the history sub-faculty, on Middelstegracht at the time. A moment I’ll never forget. An introduction for first-years to lectures and tutorials, mentoring and year groups − I barely knew what all these words meant. There in the study coordinator’s office stood a fellow student asking all sorts of timetable-related questions. What about? No idea! I barely understood her questions, so couldn’t see her problems at all. Ten years later, saw us standing in Leiden city hall answering a clear question with a clear answer: ‘I do.’
