What matters most to me is that Leiden University has been the Praesidium Libertatis for 450 years: the bastion of freedom. The courage and freedom of and within the university is embodied, unsurprisingly, by the bravery of Professor Cleveringa. The following quote from the beginning of his famous protest adress on November 26, 1940, particularly strikes me: 'The only thing I now desire is to let them be out of sight and below us, and to direct your gaze upwards to where the shining figure stands of him to whom our presence here is dedicated.' Impressive, still and always, forever an inspiration.
