Hospitals are places where we are confronted with illness and death. Although medical science has made significant progress, it cannot solve everything. Beauty and solace help patients and their loved ones cope with life's tragedies. Countless photos have been taken with the world-famous seated sea elephant who goes by the name of Homunculus Loxodontus. The statue is at the LUMC's main entrance and is so disarming and friendly that visitors momentarily forget the reason for their visit. That is what is so remarkable about the LUMC’s art collection and gallery. Since 1986, four new exhibitions featuring contemporary artists have been held there each year.
