The historical quote in lecture hall 2.01

The historical quote in lecture hall 2.01

Contribution: Ryan Dillmann (Crisis and Security Management student)

My favourite is the historical quote on the high back wall of lecture hall 2.01 in the Wijnhaven building. The 16th-century Rector Magnificus Gerard Noodt dared to defy the notion that the sovereign had any authority over religious matters. In his eyes, anyone who did try to interfere with religious freedom was nothing but a tyrant. This once again reinforces our motto: Praesidium Libertatis (Bastion of Freedom). Whether this quote has always been on a wall or not, the fact that it is there now as an ever-present finger to  the overstepping of royal power is  in my opinion, awesome.

'I am of the opinion, esteemed audience, that the prince is entitled to have great and dominant authority in civil affairs, but that he is not above others in matters of religion, as if he could give a rule to religion and sanction it by punishment of transgressors. This is the right of the divine, that is, someone else's authority. The prince can do no good here and not even escape the reproach of tyranny.'
