My favourite place in the Singelpark, and in Leiden, is Groenesteeg Cemetery. First, because it is such a beautiful, calm green oasis in a busy city that enchants whatever the season. But also because of the people buried there and their stories. Famous Leiden scholars like Snouck Hurgronje, Fruin, Reuvens and Kaiser have found their final resting place here. They rest side by side with artists, industrial magnates and politicians. Together, they have made Leiden and Leiden University great. Their stories continue to inspire new generations of scholars, artists and city makers.
