My grandfather and namesake, N.P.C. van Wijk, studied in Leiden and obtained his doctorate there. My father, H.L.A. van Wijk, was a professor of Spanish. I also had a remarkable uncle, Professor Nicolaas van Wijk. He was the first renowned professor of Slavic languages in the Netherlands. The Van Wijk Square near the University Library in Leiden is named after him.
