At the 400th anniversary in 1975, my freshman year club was allowed to help with the celelbration in Pieterskerk. I had the honour of escorting the Scottish professor Charlotte Auerbach from one location to another. She received an honorary doctorate. When I had the chance to do an internship in the third year of my medical degree, I wrote to her. She arranged an internship for me with her successor in Scotland. I found genetic research fascinating and decided that in addition to being a doctor, I would always continue to do research. I achieved this, reaching the position of professor. What I learned is that important people can be incredibly kind and that helping the next generation can be very rewarding.
