The gift of William the Silent

The gift of William the Silent

Contribution: Carlos Urbina (international taxation alumnus)

The story of William the Silent, who offered the residents of Leiden a reward for their heroic resistance to the Spanish siege in 1575. He presented the people of Leiden with two alternatives: 1. No taxes for a year, and 2. A university. They didn't go for the cheaper option, and as a result, Leiden University was founded.
