Multilingual The Hague Proverbs in the kerbstones of The Hague

Proverbs in the kerbstones of The Hague

Contribution: Ingrid Tieken (emeritus professor English of sociohistorical linguistics)

The proverbs in the kerbs of The Hague, which I created together with four linguistics students. To celebrate the university's 444th anniversary, we also developed the corresponding website, as a gift to the community. The proverb route showcases how multilingual The Hague is. From Hollands Spoor station to the city centre, 34 proverbs are embedded in the kerbs, all in different languages spoken in The Hague. The proverbs can also be found online, voiced by native speakers. This is one of the projects I worked on during my long career at the university, and one that I am immensely proud of every time I walk past it.
